BBQ "Take a Message" 7"
Themed single from our man Mark, and it slays. Three songs, but this time it's less rock/R&B and more punk, and we know this guy only writes hits. Imagine if the Saints were a one man band. That's what this reminds me of. I like the direction Mark's going in here, so look for the LP on Bomp in the new year, and I'm sure you'll be rewarded. Scum stats: if it's on Goodbye Boozy, you know there's only 300 pressed. Buy or cry.(RK)
I'm of the opinion that there are three types of people in this world: those who love and miss the Spaceshits, those who need to hear the Spaceshits ASAP, and those with absolutely zero taste in rock n roll. This single will serve as a perfect remedy for those in the first group, an ample introduction to the genius of Mark Sultan for the second, and since those in the last group are a lost cause anyway, who gives fuck if they hear this or not? Both sides of this telephone-themed slab of wax mark a return to the more amped up punk rock approach of the early Spaceshits, and while I'm a huge fan of the 50's/60's stylings of Les Sexareenos and the 1st BBQ LP, this is the best Mark's sounded since "Winter Dance Party." All three tunes rock in a catchy, yet driving manner that brings to mind late 70's greats such as the Saints and Heartbreakers, but this sounds so fucking fresh and vital that it's like hearing your favorite bands all over again for the first time. Both sides are flawless, so it's impossible to pick a hit, but suffice to say your rock n roll life is over if you don't track this record down pronto! Desperately great.(SS)
Telephone themed rec ("Take a Message" & "Busy Signal" & "Hang It Up") from one-man crew Mark Sexareeno. I really dig Mark's voice & hooks, so I can't see not liking anything he does. I know there are a lot of y'all out there like me, so pick up a copy, because (like all Goodbye Boozy singles), it's limited. (TK)

BBQ s/t (Alien Snatch CD) - One man band BBQ aka Creepy of the Spaceshits aka Bridge Mixture of Les Sexareenos aka Blortz aka Mark Sultan and so on gets his feet a-stompin' on the floorboards, his fingers a-twangin' the guitar and his lungs a-blarin' and whoops up one wild jamboree! The ghosts of Gene and Eddie supply the fuel for BBQ getting the charcoal and hickory chunks red hot enough for the rock-n-roll rack of ribs he's grilling up. There's lots of people doing the one man band thing these days but when BBQ gets the grease splattering & slathers it all up with his own special recipe, which is just the right amount of rockabilly brown sugar, bump & grind vinegar and punk rock hot sauce, it sure be damn tasty. Spaceshits lead singer Creepy and Les Sexareenos Mark Sexareeno collaborate together for this fuckin' gem of a rock'n'roll record. Everything you ever liked about the Spaceshits and Sexareenos comes out raw and rockin'. It's like 50 years of rock'n'roll, played by one man, all at the same time, with more heart and soul than most hack-job full piece bands you'll see, on one beautiful album. You really have to see it to believe it. Mark Sexareeno is a rock'n'roll hero.

BBQ S/t CD - Amazing solo-platter from the maestro behind the mic of Les Sexareenos and the Spacehsits. He’s gone all-solo and plays drums, guitar and sings and it’s all recorded live. The vocals are fantastic and the whole record oozes Elvis, Jerry Lee etc.. Sam Phillips would have recognized the genious of Mark Sultan. Now, this isn’t retro in what the word implies, it just feels a lot like the rockabilly heroes of the fifties. The songs, the singing style and of course we all know that this is just plain old rock’n’roll. (Thomas)

BBQ - BBQ CD/LP (Alien Snatch!) - Do you like Spaceshits??? and Les Sexareenos??? Yeah! Who does not???? Every garage punk must love the Spaceshits! and Les Sexareenos too!! If you haven't heard them it's time now to hear them!! BBQ are relationed with that bands, here plays Mark Sultan!... BBQ is a one man band of one of their members, and like the other two.. this is GREAT too!!!! Pure rock and roll baby!!! If you like 50s rock and roll... 60s garage, punk or at least the bands i mentioned before you should like this! If you only like Punk forget this! But if you are more than a simple punk and you love rock and roll on all his forms, catch this now! This one man band transformed in my fav one man band around! Better than King Louie??? It depends of your taste but i prefer this! Ah! the CD version include 3 tracks more! and now let's dance with me baby!!!!!!! rock and roooooooooooooooooooooooolllllllll!!!!! (read this like Guitar Wolf). Raúl Problematic

“So, as you all know, BBQ is a one-man band comprised of Mr. Mark Sultan. BBQ is Rock & Roll, and this CD proves it. For those (unfortunate souls) who've never heard BBQ, combine the best elements of Ritchie Valens, Eddie Cochran, Bo Diddley, early Elvis, Little Richard, early Motown, The Cramps and the Sonics and you've got an idea. It's raw, it's distorted, it was recorded LIVE, and it's one of the best things I've heard in a long, long, long time!”
Nothing To Do, USA

“ …But ex-Spaceshit Mark Sexareeno stole the show with his killer B.B.Q. A one-man band of old-school hillbilly soul/blues guitar and percussion (how the fuck does he do it all at once?), taken to the next level with his unbelievable better-than-Elvis crooning, Sexareeno made you forget he wasn't backed by a full Motown ensemble. His cussin' and banter were better than any old-time radio DJ. Even typically verbose promoter Dan Burke was speechless. I think he had tears in his eyes.”
Now Magazine, Canada

“Now here's a one man band that's not trying to get the trashiest sound ever – this is an absolutely fantastic rock and roll record: great songs, great voice, excellent guitar and a driving beat! Highly recommended, and don't miss him when he plays around!!”
Crypt, USA/Germany

“You can call him Creepy, Bridge Mixture, Mark Sultan or anything you want, but the man with a no name, the guy with a thousand faces is back! The scream behind the Spaceshits, the drumming assault behind Les Sexareenos (he sang a couple of songs with them, too) has now decided that drumming and singing was not enough, so he took a guitar out of the garbage and became THE INCREDIBLE, THE FUCKIN GREAT BBQ!!! The ultimate one man band!!! No, in fact, BBQ isn't just a one man bad, BBQ is one of THEE GREATEST ROCK N'ROLL BANDS EVER !! That's what BBQ is all about, ROCK N'ROLL ! He has always loved rock n'roll and always will! This record is just so good I cannot believe it! It's like listening to 50 years of rock n'roll in forty minutes! This guys does it all: Rock n'roll, blues, R’n'b, punk! Threw My Girl a Party is what the Spaceshits would have sounded like if they were a one man band, 3 Days is the ultimate lo-fi rock n'roll song (thanx Edouard Laroque, the most lo-fi guy ever, for that). If you buy the CD, you'll have 3 uncredited songs!”

“Like hearing the Velvets, the Falcons, the Gories and Eddie Cochran being puked up out of a possessed maniac…”

“Hell, you know you should dig anything Spaceshits related, and this is definitely no exception. Mark Sultan takes up the Kib Husk/BBQ persona and ponies up with such a racket you ain’t gonna believe it’s just a one man band. But it is, and it’s better than since the Haze himself. This fucker is a straight rock’n’roll party, much of it more reminiscent of early Spaceshits BFTG rock (“Threw My Girl a Party”, “Hang On”) than Sexareenos frat/party sounds. You get twelve tracks (plus three bonus ones only on the CD) of pure rock stomp, from three different recording sessions all done live. The living room session tracks have that lo-fi charm, but the stuff done with Edouard Larocque/Scat Rag Booster have a huge drum sound that kicks you right in the kidney. Two covers, two tracks reprised from the 7” on Goodbye Boozy, and all killer. Vinyl is on Sounds of Subterranea without the bonus tracks. Too bad. Get either version at any cost, it’s top ten material all the way.”
“(from 2003’s top ten): 4) BBQ s/t CD – Mark Sultan does no wrong in my book. True rock and roll all the way. Infectious.”
Blank Generation Webzine, USA

“… BBQ sat very relaxed in a chair drinking a beer and smoking a cigarette when the lights went on onstage. He promptly kicked into a rumbling set that had the crowd rocking and calling his name. …If you dig the Velvet Underground, Sun Records stuff and old-timey R&B, DO NOT MISS BBQ! Very cool.”
The Lowdown, Norway

“The One-man band that Rock 'n' Rollers should care about!! 12 awesome songs... Mark Sultan should be considered as one of the best garage rock 'n' roll Vocalists ever... no less!!”
Zaxxon Virile Action, Canada

“Hot diggity! It's a booze soaked voodoo Hootenanny from hell, I tell ya! Mark Sultan (ex-Spaceshits, Les Sexareenos) carries on the glorious one-man-with-guitar-and-drumkit tradition of Hasil Adkins, Lightning Beatman and Bog Log III. High on that vintage Sun Records sound, our merry Canadian cranks out one infectious shitraw hillbilly r'n'r tune after another like he was raised on corn liquor, cotton, Memphis blues'n'rockabilly and that hellfire'n'brimstone chuch gospel. Unlike most albums these recordings are actually rougher (all recorded live in 1 or 2 takes) than Mr. Sultan's brilliant recent performance here in Copenhagen (see live review elsewhere in this issue)! Get the vinyl version with a great pre-war blues-like drawn cover of BBQ (incl. poster) instead of that buttugly CD.”
Lowcut Zine, Denmark

“BBQ is Kib Husk one-man-band and this is recorded live. Result is really fascinating. It takes 2 people for White Stripes to do the same thing and BBQ does it even better. Well, music is not the same - BBQ is dirty swamp rockin' trash blues. I know there are people who don't like one / two man bands and I'm also always skeptical about them. But there are surprises and BBQ is definitely one of them. Specially B side sounds like normal band - I don't know what this guy does I just can't believe it's all recorded live - I have to see it with my own eyes. But who cares anyway - it's ass kicking music and I love it!”
No Brains, Spain

“The most full-sounding, rocking one-man band release yet! He could've passed this off as a full band. Great 50's style vocals, garage trash rnr blues.”
Underground Medicine, USA

“…Pure, simple, rudimentary rock’n’roll full of soul and intensity…”
Green Hell, Germany

“Best voice I’ve heard in a while. Very authentic shit, but not dated at all.”
Pixzine, USA

“Speaking of one man bands, pick up the BBQ single on Goodbye Boozy, the most dependable limited-run singles label out there. You won’t be disappointed. Act quick though, because it’s limited to 300 copies. King Louie better up the ante, because Kib Husk tears some shit up. I always knew there was reason Creepy was my favorite Spaceshit, and these two tracks are as catchy as a one-man act can be. Unadulterated rockin’ in its simplest form. Plus, you can have hours of fun identifying the characters on the sleeve. Let’s see, there’s the deer-headed guy from that European flick, the snake-chick from ‘Lair of the White Worm’,…”
Blank Generation, USA

“Great fucking rock&roll.”
Demolition Derby, Belgium

“Fuckin cool! Mark Sultan (Spaceshits, Sexareenos)`s one-man band is one of the best I`ve heard. ‘3 Days’ is a real rockabilly stomper. The lyrics are ace. Really paranoid and evil: “you better treat me right, cuz in 3 days time we’re gonna die!”. Cool shit. ‘I’m the One’ is a great, bluesy/garagey rock n roller. The sound is great and this guy`s voice made my girlfriend hot. Asshole. Buy it.”
Outta Time, USA

“Goodbye Boozy Records sent me this 7” by a group called BBQ a long while ago… limited to 300 and probably already sold out, BBQ is Mark, of the SPACESHITS/LES SEXAREENOS, I think…and if you dig the way out sounds of the SPACESHITS and the 1950’s suzy q rock n roll…well then…what the fuck! BBQ, the one-man-band, is killer garage and woulda been on my top 2002 list if I had bothered to listen to it earlier…sorry Mr. Boozy…anyway…try and find it…”
Blank Generation, USA

“The ‘3 Days’ 7 inch by BBQ is the latest offering from Italy’s Goodbye Boozy Records. BBQ is a one-man band and that one man is Kib Husk. Kib Husk sang as Creepy in The Spaceshits. Creepy co-runs Sultan Records as Mark Spaceshit. Mark Spaceshit drums as Bridge Mixture on the first Les Sexareenos LP. Bridge Mixture drums as Noamnm Rumnyun on the Les Sexareenos second LP. Got that? There are a lot of good one-man bands out there, Hasil Adkins, King Louie One Man Band, Bob Log III, John Schooley And His One Man Band, and BBQ is another. Guitar in his hands, drums on his feet. This record was recorded live and is lo-fi. It sounds great to my ears though. Side A has the title track ‘3 Days’. As I’ve said many times before, it’s all about the song. This is a really cool song. It would be great if the Backstreet Boys sang it. Of course it’s much cooler this way. It’s a straight-up rock n’ roller with a great melody. I’ve been singing it for days. Side B has ‘I’m the One’. This song has a traditional ‘50s rock n’ roll feel to it. Hell, if you told me it was a cover of an old Buddy Holly song, I’da bought it. Another great song. So if you like one-man bands, no scratch that, if you like rock n’ roll get this record. This is one of the best singles of the year.”
Cyclops Webzine, USA

"…and no, it`s not a drum machine, it`s BBQ – a guy who plays drums with his fuckin feet! A no-bullshit rock and roll assault that had the crowd going crazy. He was entertaining the folks with both an arsenal of top notch songs AND incredibly charming and personal banter that had the girls hypnotized and the guys hollering… the best act of the night, hands-down.”
RNBNR, Canada

“ONE-MAN-BAND ALERT! BBQ is the solo brainchild of Mark Sultan, former vocalist for the amazing SPACESHITS and current member of LES SEXAREENOS! It more than exceeded my expectations, but I've always been a fan of this guy's bands. In BBQ, I'd say he's able to hold his own against KING LOUIE, which is probably the biggest compliment I could give to a one-man-band. Gimme more, Kib Husk, gimme more!”
AMG News, USA

Excellent!”
Dig It!, France

“BBQ is INCREDIBLE. I had the other losers round and we agreed it should come with a sticker on the front saying "100% PARTY RECORD!" This is a fucking KILLER Ronnie Dawson/Roy Orbison mixture that I LOVE! Most one- man bands go for full lo-fi but BBQ is just the right amount of scuzz and is GUARANTEED to get EVERYBODY dancing. Absolutely amazing record! That's going on at the next party cos I KNOW everybody's gonna be getting up and dancing. Everything about BBQ is great. I can't BELIEVE how good this record is. Even the SLEEVE is great! (I love the stars!). It's a totally unique record and you must be totally proud of it! It's got the great 50s sludge but with great tunes and great powerpop style guitar. Totally unique!”
The Real Losers, UK

"BBQ is Mr. Mark Sultan from the beloved Spaceshits, and the also-beloved Les Sexareenos. This time he's fronting (and backing) a single-minded, primitive tribute Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee & Buddy Holly worship and backwoods good times. It's a tremendous little disc, and you can't believe this stuff is recorded live, while Sultan is bashing it out on every instrument simultaneously. You can't stop playing this one because it's so perfect for every occasion. Mopping the floor, taking a shit, drinking a beer, staring at the walls, BARBECUING. This is perfect music for all of that. This is one of my favorites of the year so far."
